The Best Way To Eliminate Credit Card Debt

Posted on February 23, 2010

Credit card debt plagues millions of households around the country, but there are ways, and the best way to eliminate credit card debt and to find the best one may take a combination of tactics for your situation.

The following three tactics to lower and pay down credit card debt can be used separately, but are most effective when used together. Before you start any credit card debt pay off plot, you need to know the truth about your credit card debt.

Make a list of all credit card accounts, current and past, listing the account holder contact information, the current balance, the interest rate and what the minimum monthly payment is. Then, take a deep breath and add up the balance. This will be hard especially if you have no thought how deep you are in debt, but is absolutely crucial to the healing and pay off process.

The first way to work to eliminate credit card debt is through a form of debt management called debt negotiation. When you take the time to negotiate with your creditors you have the opportunity to come to a settlement agreement that could save you hundreds, even thousands, of dollars.

If you don’t have a lump sum amount to pay for a settlement, then consider asking them to lower the interest rate or offer to go to another company with a lower rate. Credit card companies will most often fight to keep your account with them and open even if that means lowering your interest rate.

Another way to work on eliminating your credit card debt is to place together a pay off plot and stick to it. This means you need to start with the account that has the highest interest rate and pay as large of payments as you can each month, while still paying the minimums on all your other accounts to avoid defaulting on them.
